MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

Instructions for editors

There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

  1. Proposed additions
  2. Proposed removals
  3. Troubleshooting and problems
  4. Discussion

Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

Instructions for admins

Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

  1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
  2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
  3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages).
  4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regex — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
  5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
  6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number - 1125637242 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

universalcelebs.com

aggressively spamming links to https://universalcelebs.com/ and edit warring to do so, past final warning. Every single edit they have made is adding unnecessary references to this website which is an unreliable content-scraper with no about page, Atlantic306 (talk) 20:08, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hermetic.com

This site had managed to spam many occult-related articles, primarily by replacing valid book citations with abbreviated links to the book text posted on the site (possible copyvio issues?) or by adding external links to articles. Over time, I've replaced these spam links with full book citations or links to material on the more reputable site, Internet Sacred Text Archive, but since the site seems to be an advert farm, it'd be nice to keep them from doing the same again. Skyerise (talk) 00:45, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Those existing links should probably be cleaned up first. OhNoitsJamie Talk 01:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's a url shortening service which I regularly use. It's just a redirecting service to other site or page. Some spammers might here have abused using this site's service by linking back to their actual spam sites or pages but that doesn't mean this domain is the cause of spamming. Consider other tons of url shortening or redirecting services out there and check their domain ages or site's archived history. if they've been around long enough and not looking like a fly by night type site then shouldn't be blacklisted. Troubleshooting and problems

Unable to provide references to "informitv.com" but it does not appear to be in a blacklist. Please investigate. This is news site indexed by Google News, providing news about internet television and video, continuously published since 2004, ISSN 1759-8796. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tellytext (talkcontribs) 08:03, 16 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It is indeed on the blacklist, having been added in 2008 following this report. - MrOllie (talk) 11:52, 16 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for investigating. Sorry, I'm new here. What can be done to remove this block? ~~~ Tellytext (talk) 18:35, 16 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tellytext: Defer to Whitelist to propose allowance of a specific link of a blacklisted site. ~Anachronist (talk) 04:46, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
