July
Foxglove, Hausen.jpg

Lovely, thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:58, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt, hello! What an enjoyment it was to learn about this obscure but important photographer. It was delightful to imagine him riding his bike all over the city to photograph natural springs. I also loved it that so many of his photos had pictures of children, and that he bequeathed part of his estate in his will to children's aid organizations and animal shelters. What a guy! Hope all is very well with you and that you are enjoying your rambles in the woods. I've got lots of tomatoes ripening in my little urban garden here. In good cheer, Netherzone (talk) 07:12, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
If you click on July much of my enjoyment is pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:20, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, those wonderful food photos are making me hungry! I love it that they are sorted under "Songs". Are you experienced in foraging? It is something I'm interested in and want to learn more about. Next month I will be attending a conference with two good friends on the topic of foraging (and identifying) wild foods and mushrooms. Many field trips are planned. You are reminding me that I should bring my camera. Netherzone (talk) 08:05, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt - FYI, I added three alternate hooks on your DYK nom for Heidi Grant Murphy. What a fascinating woman! Netherzone (talk) 16:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! - I like that the photographer made it to the stats! It was LouisAlain who discovered Murphy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:14, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, good to know JRS made it to the stats. I loved the expression in the photographic self-portrait of him, and was hoping the image might bring in a few curious readers. Thanks for the note on LouisAlain, I don't know him here, but will check out his user page. Murphy seems amazing, and the New York Times profile on her and her "power couple" spouse was an interesting read. I like the 3rd ALT hook the best because it states statistics (facts) about the number of times she performed at the MET Opera, and also had that hooky-poetic ending about how opera can act upon a person's "inner being". I hope that that last bit will peak readers curiosity! Question for you: If I added the ALT hooks, am I still eligible to review the DYK? Netherzone (talk) 16:26, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
(returned after refreshing concert, all-Vivaldi, all strings - haven't looked at pics yet) - Thank you! No, you are not able to review your "own" hooks, but you could help me with several others where I'm stuck. - Will you add him to the stats? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:14, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, I'm happy to help you with with hooks if you get stuck. Let me know which articles, it's no trouble at all, and I think it would be enjoyable. Yes, I'll add JRS to the stats, will have a look at the link above. Glad you enjoyed the concert! Netherzone (talk) 19:26, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Oops, sorry I pinged you again, I'm using ReplyLink, and it automatically pings. I'll have to remember that in the future. Netherzone (talk) 19:27, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
No problems with an extra ping, just never mind adding afterwards if not, - I run a watchlist. If you look for my name on the noms you'll see the problems. Pick one that interests you, and don't touch others until that is solved, I'd say. Today's pic is not as good as on Friday (facing a strong headlight for the streaming by Magenta), but will upload now anyway. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Just for curiosity: did you click on "the stats" above? ... because I think I gave you the right link --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
I can't recall if I went to the main DYK page or clicked on the link above. I'm sure you gave me the right link, and that I goofed. Hopefully I will not goof again, but it has been known to happen ;-) especially if I'm editing too fast or when I am tired. Netherzone (talk) 16:25, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
Please don't blame yourself too much, especially over a minor wrong place that was easy to fix. - Recommended reading today: 2 interesting DYK (I think), sadly 2 who died (on top of 2 from Poland yesterday), and a concert in which Daniel Barenboim just played piano, - and afterwards he and the orchestra received last year's prize (pictured). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:13, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
The recommended reading is fascinating, as always, especially loved learning about Jochen Schmidt the dance critic. I will have to see if I can find his book on Pina Bausch. I saw her dance many years ago at BAM with her company, and it blew my mind. A set had been built onstage from cinderblocks, a huge grey wall, and it was toppled (deliberately) and came crashing down on the stage, the pulverized blocks creating almost a smoke screen of dust from which the dancers emerged. It was one of the most unforgettable dance performances I've ever seen. Simply phenomenal. Netherzone (talk) 02:33, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for sharing. I had an unforgettable night with her Sacre, danced in mud, pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:11, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Today: 3 DYK, including that the author dedicated a summer story to a license plate number ;) - Five rows of images added, sunflowers and butterflies continued, four rows of 15 August alone, - a rich Monteverdi day, - enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:24, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
Brilliant! Thank you for the links to these DYKs and the images. Do let me know if you need any help with hooks, I'd be delighted to help out. On another note, from this continent, I'm very lucky to participate on days of mushroom forays into the Rocky Mountains with several mushroom scholars and culinary and medicinal mushroom experts and two great old friends! I'm so enthralled in learning in the field I keep forgetting to take photos. Thank you for inspiring me, Gerda! Netherzone (talk) 03:58, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
today Giedrė Šlekytė --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:55, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Today: Teresa Żylis-Gara, the second soprano to impress me on stage, died, - long live the memory of her beautiful singing, remembered with thanks. 28 August 2013 was a special concert day: look. After Hillbillyholiday gave me a tree. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

How nice you were given a tree by Hillbillyholiday! Thank you for the link to the T Z-G article, and congratulations on todays DYK on the fascinating venue Bio's Bahnhof. My trip the Rocky Mountains to attend a mycology conference was fantastic. So many huge Porcini mushrooms, chanterelles, hawk's wing mushrooms and giant puffballs! I've started reading Suzanne Simard's book Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest on the interrelationships between forests and mushroom mycelium, really fascinating!Netherzone (talk) 16:35, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

And I thank the Earth for providing its inhabitants with thermal springs! I'm so glad to have visited my favorite ones, Pagosa Hot Springs, last weekend. Here's a photo from my trip of the Mother Spring (that's really what she is called), and she is spectacular indeed and has many "child" springs dotted around the area. So much magic and healing! Hi Gerda! How nice you are vacationing in Munich. I will check out your latest creations! I remember years ago visiting Munich and seeing the wonderful outdoor sculpture show that "takes over the city", it was called Skulpturenprojekt München or something similar.
I have a question for you on an unrelated subject: I recently started a short stub on Aachener Thermalquellen the hot springs of Aachen and Burtschneider, slowly translating from German when I can find sources in English. I wanted to ask you, do you think the article should be named "Aachener Thermalquellen" or "Hot springs of Aachen and Burtschneider"? I wasn't sure if I should go with the German name for the springs or if I should Anglicize it. What do you think? Netherzone (talk) 20:05, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
today, an Italian opera, my second ever, as the TFA written by two dear people, and a park where I went with dear people, as pictured DYK - For that title, depends. If there are sources in English that use an English name, then English, otherwise German, with translations and redirects. We should not invent names, and we should not take English "names" from German sources. Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland a prominent example. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:16, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

A somewhat premature New Year's greeting

John Vanderlyn 001.jpg
John Vanderlyn, Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos (c.1812),
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
Best wishes for a safe, healthy and prosperous 2022.
Thank you for your contributions toward making Wikipedia a better and more accurate place.
BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:09, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

Moral lesson: John Vanderlyn was an American painter who studied in Paris, and his life-sized
Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos was one of the first large nudes exhibited in the United States.
Peddling the poison as well as the cure, this overtly sensuous work was presented to the public as a
moral lesson on the consequences of lascivious behavior. Visible in the distance is the ship of
Princess Ariadne's secret lover, Theseus, for whom she has betrayed her people by helping him to
escape the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur. Ariadne's bliss will come to an end when she awakens
from her post-coital reverie, only to discover that the faithless Theseus has sailed away without her.
Thanks so much, BoringHistoryGuy, I hope 2022 is a good year for you as well. Netherzone (talk) 22:55, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

AFD or not

New here and would like to ask your opinion on notability of these artists: Ewa Doroszenko, BerriBlue --JakubDeWisniewski (talk) 13:59, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

@JakubDeWisniewski thank you for your message and for reaching out. I'm busy today, and it will take me a day or two to research these artists and look into the sourcing and also to see what else might be found. But I will get to it. Sometimes there is content that is not included in the article that could support it, and sometimes an article is filled with fluff and weak sourcing. That is why editors are asked to do a WP:BEFORE search before nominating (or !voting) on an AfD. Wikipedia's criteria for notability for artists can be found here: WP:NARTIST and WP:GNG. For info on what constitutes "reliable sources" see WP:RS, and for what is meant by significant coverage, see WP:SIGCOV. Hope that's helpful info for you in the meantime, and hope you enjoy your time here. WP is a remarkable place! Netherzone (talk) 16:14, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
@JakubDeWisniewski - This morning I went through both articles' sourcing, as well as an independent online search for each artist. I think Ewa Doroszenko is closer to meeting WP criteria for NARTIST and GNG, as her work is included in the two permanent collections. (I've added these to the article along with citations to the collected works). However, I'm not that certain of the notability of the two institutions, as my knowledge of the contemporary Polish art scene is limited (I'm mostly familiar with the 90s and 2000s in contemporary Polish art), but give it the benefit of the doubt that these are credible institutions based on their websites. There also is press coverage of her work in pieces with author by-lines, which indicates that they are probably not paid placement of PR (native advertising), which is a good sign. Re: BerriBlue my personal thoughts are that it is WP:TOOSOON for this artist to have an encyclopedia entry. She is in the emerging phase of her career, and the sourcing is weak (although there are a lot of refs in the article which makes it "appear" to be substantial coverage). There are a couple good sources, but most of it consists of blog posts, pieces without author bylines (probably paid PR), and primary sources (like her own website). The article reads as a promotional piece to me, with the possibility that it might be WP:UPE. I think in a few more years if she keeps going in the direction she is, there may be enough high-quality sourcing to support an article. So, in a nutshell, at this time, I think Ewa is notable, but BeriBlue is not. Hope these analyses are helpful to you, but keep in my that they don't reflect the community consensus (they are my policy-based opinions) - if you want to gain the feedback of the community, you could try posting on the talk pages of the respective articles, or WP:WikiProject Poland, or take either or both to AfD for the community to weigh in on.
