The exilarch[ a] was the leader of the Jewish community [en ] in Persian Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq ) for most of the time from the Parthians era, Sassanid Empire , and the Abbasid Caliphate , until the Mongol invasion of Baghdad in 1258.
